Is Teaching the Right Career for You?

2-11-2016 4-32-19 PMTeachers are a valuable asset to our community and serve as an inspiration to many of us throughout our lives. This may be the reason some industry professionals are attracted to the rewarding career of teaching. However, not everyone is built for teaching in today’s classroom. Here are some things consider to determine if a teaching career is right for you.

Do you possess the qualities of a great teacher? You do not have to be athletic to become a teacher. However, teaching does require physical stamina especially if you are interested in teaching elementary education to manage a classroom full of energetic children. Managing a classroom also requires a high level of patience and communications skills to not only relate to students, but to relate to adults including parents and administrators. Many public schools have limited resources so creativity may be necessary to develop lesson plans to accommodate various learning styles and engage students.

Do you have experience? Volunteer opportunities to work with children are plentiful. I recommend contacting a local school or non-profit for information on the process. Also, think about your skill sets to determine how you translate your experience to hiring managers. Be prepared for a background check.

Do you have the right degree? Most schools require teachers to have a bachelor’s degree in education or in the subject matter that they would like to teach in such as mathematics or science. However, there are alternative programs to assist transitioning professionals who possess a bachelors’ degree in other areas with gaining the training they need to become effective licensed teachers. I recommend researching alternative pathway programs in the counties where you would like to teach.

VETERANS GET HELP TRANSITIONING TO CIVILIAN CAREERS

**To watch the video of the panel discussion, please click here.

When it comes to setting themselves apart from other job seekers, one of the unique challenges faced by the increasing number of military veterans entering the civilian job market can be described, literally, as a language barrier.

Military lingo is filled with words and acronyms that are not commonly used in the civilian world. (Do you know what the CINCPAC is?) So it’s no surprise that when a veteran creates a résumé, it might seem as though the document were written in a foreign language.
